The Information Center: Celebrating a trusted and valuable resource in the Downriver community

When unanticipated situations come up in life, sometimes just knowing that there is someone who wants to help can make the process of recovery, transition, or rehabilitation a little easier.

The Information Center is a Downriver nonprofit that helps connect people with local social work organizations and community resources.  Formed in 1975, The Information Center has been serving the Downriver community for 40 years.

Jeff Padden founded The Information Center from the desire to provide better access to government programs for people in the community.  Today, The Information Center continues to be a trusted resource for people to turn to when challenges arise, from dealing with unemployment to providing care for the elderly or connecting people to affordable and reliable healthcare options. Partnering organizations include include SEMCA, Michigan Department of Community Health, Wayne County Community College District, and Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency.  The Information Center recently received from Wayne County Commissioner Ray Basham a resolution which recognized the agency for 40 years of service to the community, honoring the Center’s Care Management Services Department for receiving the top acuity ranking for providing high-quality service to high-need clients in Wayne County. The Center also received the second-best rating in the State of Michigan in regards to quality assurance for healthcare operations according to the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Edward D’Angelo, President and CEO, says that the essence of what The Information Center does is let people know that someone cares– that even in hard situations there are people out there who want to help.  In 2008-2009, the organization’s center received nearly 80,000 calls, many from people looking for options to deal with unemployment. The Information Center was ready to help.

The organization will hold a gala on October 8 to celebrate and commemorate the work that has been done and continues to be done for people in Michigan. Individual tickets are available for $100 or $125 after October 1. Held at Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Southgate, the gala will include a VIP reception, a three-course meal, and two auctions. Proceeds from the gala enable the organization to offer free programs and services to the community.
