History
Jeff Padden, then State Representative, and a small group of committed community organizers founded the Downriver Citizens Information and Referral Office in 1975. The primary purpose was to cut bureaucratic "red tape" in order to help people gain access to public services. While the name has changed three times in its history, the mission of The Information Center, Inc., The Family Resource Place has changed little. The primary purpose today continues to be educating people about options and simplifying access to resources and services.

The Information Center, Inc. is proud of its grass roots, community based-beginnings. Just as it did then, the agency continues to strive to fill community needs and to patch the holes in the tapestry of services to local residents. This has resulted in a number of programs that exist for the purpose of smoothing access to services so that people can get the help they need to resolve life's challenges.
