How to Help

Holiday Assistance Program

"I have two children, ages 4 and 6. Their dad was laid off two months ago, and while he's really trying to find work, he's had no success. I started a job for the first time last week, but it pays minimum wage and we are barely making ends meet. Christmas is around the corner and it breaks my heart that the kids who have been helping out especially hard these past couple of weeks, are going to go without a Christmas..."

Give your time or money generously to the Holiday Assistance Program at The Information CenterThanks to the generosity of our neighbors, many children will see Christmas even when things are at their bleakest. Last year, with the help of almost 150 donors, 1,543 people were 'adopted', received a home-delivered holiday meal, or were provided with a food box and household necessities. And all of them had incomes that were at poverty level or below.

How does it work?
As a donor, you can choose to 'adopt a family' or donate gift certificates, which are passed along to those in need. We take care of all of the screening and provide you with a 'wish list' for each person in the family. It includes sizes, ages, gift preferences and needs. You decide which items you wish to purchase. You wrap the gifts, tag them with the first names provided, and deliver them to us. We make sure your gifts are passed on to your family and take care of the delivery end of things. Throughout the process, you remain anonymous, as does the person who receives the gifts.

How do I sign up?
To donate, call (734) 282-7171 or make a donation online.

To receive help, call (734) 282-7171; applications for the holiday program are processed at specific dates and times and begin in mid-October. Items that you need to bring with you include:

  • Identification, such as a driver's license or state ID card
  • Proof of income, such as pay stub, FIA budget breakdown, child support or social security statement
  • Proof of residence, such as a lease, Medicaid card or utility bill with name and address
  • Proof of family size, such as a Medicaid card or birth certificates

Please note: persons are eligible for assistance only if they have not received holiday assistance from The Information Center for at least three years. If it has been less that three years, we will refer you to other programs.
