| "I made a promise to my husband that I wouldn't put him in a nursing home. Now, I am physically and mentally exhausted under the strain of caring for him 24 hours a day. Can anyone help? Does anyone understand?" |
Mrs. B of Taylor has been caring for her husband since he suffered two strokes over four years ago. Like most caregivers, this new role consumes the majority of her time. Not only does she assist with his toileting, bathing and dressing; she oversees the cooking, cleaning, shopping and finances. About six months ago, Mr. B began wandering from home when left unattended. Now, in addition to her other responsibilities, Mrs. B needs to take him with her when she goes out except on that rare occasion that someone else is available to monitor him.
When Mrs. B called The Information Center, a Certified Information and Referral Specialist listened to her, understood what she was facing on a daily basis and wanted to help. Mrs. B was given detailed information about a training course offered in her area. The Information Center, Inc., in collaboration with the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging and The Senior Alliance, designed the Caregiver Training and Support Group Program for people just like Mrs. B.
Each training program runs for 12 weeks consisting of a 1-hour training followed by a 1-hour support group. The goal is to bring resources to the attention of caregivers in addition to providing them with valuable information about caring for their older loved ones.
A recent participant in the program shared the following:
"I found the overall quality of this seminar to be excellent. I attended with my mother, the primary caregiver. I enjoyed the sharing and listening to my mother when she asked questions. I now have a much better understanding of her concerns and needs related to caring for my father and feel better prepared to anticipate future caregiving needs."
At The Information Center, Mrs. B and others have found a ray of hope. We are here to help you help your loved ones too.
