Paralyzed and Alone

"Paralyzed and alone, an URGENT household repair was the last thing Betty needed!"

"Betty's" hot water heater burst. She needed to have a new one installed at her home in Rockwood, but she just didn't have the money to do it. It was January and she was trying to decide how she would manage without hot running water. Paralyzed and living alone, her income consisted of Social Security and food stamps. She had no means of securing extra income and had been denied assistance from the Family Independence Agency. The estimated cost for the tank was $150.00. When the staff at The Information Center heard about the situation, it was immediately deemed as URGENT!

The Information and Referral Specialist referred Betty to three agencies that might be able to help her and asked her to call back to The Information Center if she was unable to find help. Wasting no time at all, Betty called back later in the day and informed staff of her progress. While it was possible one agency might be able to help her, it could be several months before all the paperwork was completed and a repair scheduled. At that point, staff began to again seek options and eventually contacted the Council for Action on Aging, a coalition of individuals, businesses and agencies dedicated to helping seniors. The request was approved immediately and a check written to The Information Center the same day. Immediately, a check was written to Home Depot and the client's son picked up the check and purchased the water tank. He promptly installed the unit and the situation was resolved.

Betty and her son were amazed to receive results so quickly. In this instance, The Information Center was successful due to valuable contacts that had been established through the years, as well as The Center's reputation for trying all other options first. Because of The Center's prompt response, Betty was only without water for a little over one day. When a follow-up call was made a few days later, Betty was very appreciative and expressed her gratitude again for providing the help she needed at the time she needed it.

When you have an urgent need, we invite you to call The Information Center.
